An animated film: "Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood"
This is an animated film based on the childhood of respected director, writer, and producer Richard Linklater.
"Apollo 10+1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood" is Richard Linklater's personal project realized with the demanding technique of rotoscoping - a film about reliving a historical event that shows that, at a certain moment, everyone's childhood becomes history.
This is an animated film based on the childhood of respected director, writer and producer Richard Linklater. This is his second film that was completely rotoscoped, or in the simplest terms – each recorded frame was redrawn by animators, so the recorded material served as a basis for creating animated work.
The script is set in 1969 during the events leading up to the Apollo 11 moon landing and follows two intertwined perspectives. One features the astronauts and mission control during this triumphant event, while the other tells what it was like from the perspective of an excited boy named Stanley who lives near NASA's Space Center in Houston. We get a combination of an exacting reconstruction of this special moment in human history and a child's fantasy about how he was plucked from his average suburban life to secretly train for a mission to the moon.
The story begins with Stanley being recruited for a top-secret mission and the narrative literally stops during that mission - then begins a retrospective tracking of the daily life of Stanley's family, his friends and the neighborhood in which he lives.
We follow what it was like to grow up in a house with two middle-class parents and six children of different ages and interests. Richard Linklater's first animated work "Waking Life" was a philosophical film. This time he presented to us an almost certainly autobiographical film - he grew up in the Houston area, and was the same age as his protagonist at the time of the moon landing.
Richard Linklater re-uses the visuals and themes in a deeply personal and innovative way and proves that he has a perfect understanding of the time and environment in which the story is set. The film exudes a nostalgic feeling and is in line with the sophisticated storytelling characteristic of this author.
