The tragedy happened in New York when 19 people lost their lives. At least nine children are among the victims.A fire recorded this Sunday in a Bronx apartment building became one of the most tragic fires recorded in recent New York history.

At least 200 firefighters participated in extinguishing the fire that broke out around mid-morning on the second and third floors of a 19-story building, explained the New York Fire Department (FDNY). Neighbors recounted seeing desperate people, apparently trapped and unable to escape.

"It was chaos. I saw the smoke, a lot of people were panicking. You could see nobody wanted to jump off the building. People were waving their arms from the windows," said George King, who lives in the adjacent building.

The fire probably originated from an electric heater that caught fire in one of the apartments, the flames spreading rapidly due to the fact that the door to the compound was left open.

"We have lost 19 of our neighbors. It is a tragedy beyond all measure," confirmed the mayor of the city, Eric Adams, who asked to pray for the deceased and, especially, for the nine minors killed in the fire.

The balance of deaths could still increase, since the authorities initially spoke of more than 30 very serious injuries, mostly due to smoke inhalation.

Cardi B has offered to pay for the burial costs of the 19 people who died in a fire that swept through a New York City building.

Mayor Eric Adams revealed that the Grammy-winning rapper has offered financial aid to fire victims in the Bronx, where she grew up. Many of the victims are from The Gambia, and the families of several of the victims planned to bury them in their West African homeland. Cardi B also is willing to pay the repatriation costs of the victims who will be buried in The Gambia, the mayor's office said.

"I am so proud to be from the Bronx and have many family and friends who still live and work there. So when I heard about the fire and all the victims, I knew I had to do something to help," Cardi B said in a statement.

"I cannot imagine the pain and anguish that the families of the victims are experiencing, but I hope that not having to worry about the costs associated with the burial of their loved ones will help them move forward and heal. I send my prayers and condolences to everyone affected by this horrific tragedy.” said Cardi.

The fire, which was the deadliest in New York City in three decades, was caused by a heating defect, according to authorities.
