LG's new OLED gaming monitor

LG recently displayed a 42-inch prototype of a gaming monitor that bends at the touch of a button at the SID Display Week 2022 trade event.

After TVs and smartphones, the OLED display is progressively making its way into laptop and monitor devices, and while "curved" models for more immersion are not for everyone, LG demonstrated a prototype that can be straight or curved at the recent Display Week in California.

LG's rollable screens, among other things, have demonstrated that OLED panels can be extremely flexible. The game monitor's 42-inch prototype, which has yet to be named, can be adjusted from a typical, straight condition without bending to 1000R.

The displayed example has a UHD resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and hence a pixel density of 104 PPI, with a switching time of only 0.1 milliseconds and a refresh rate of 120 Hertz.

The color gamut should be 99 percent DCI-P3 and the Delta-E color deviation should be fewer than two, according to LG. The peak brightness for content with 10% white is predicted to be 720 cd/m2 and 135 cd/m2 for a totally white display.

LG also released the findings of a study, which found that, contrary to the monitor exhibited, a curvature of 800R should provide the best gaming experience, although less curved panels would have performed marginally better in specific sports games.

The number, as is generally known, describes the radius, or the distance in millimeters between the circle's outline and its center. The letter R stands for radius.

Meanwhile, the curvature of today's gaming monitors spans from 1800R to 4000R, with LG estimating that the best viewing distance between the screen and the player is roughly 800 millimeters.

According to the study's statement, this means that gamers have previously lost out on ideal curvature and consequently the ultimate gaming experience. There is no word on when the self-curving gaming monitor would hit the market, but mass production should be considered.
