Only a small circle of people knew about Freddie Mercury's serious illness
Freddie Mercury is one of the greatest singers of all time, and his appearance on stage as well as his vocal abilities have not been surpassed by anyone to date.
Legendary Freddie Mercury (singer Fred Bulsara), singer of the band Queen, would celebrate his 75th birthday these days, and judging by numerous reputable magazines and critics and professionals, Mercury is one of the best vocalists of all time.
The Briton was actually born in Zanzibar, and after attending schools in India he returned to his home country, only to later move to the UK with his parents. Already at the age of 12, he had his first band, and he never hid his love for music. He completed his studies in art and design in England, and it was he who later partially designed the Queen logo.
After graduating, Freddie moved from band to band for months, during which time he befriended drummer, Roger Taylor. In 1970, he formed Queen with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor and took on the stage name Freddie Mercury, and his career suddenly began to take an upward trajectory.
“Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Will Rock You,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” are just some of the timeless songs the Queen has conquered the world with. Although no one believed she would succeed because of the uniqueness of her music, Queen released 14 studio albums during Freddie Mercury's lifetime, which are still among the best-selling in the world today. By 1980, they had become the largest stadium band in the world, and Freddie was the most popular singer in the world. In August 1986, Freddie made his last concert appearance with the band Queen.
After leaving Queen he embarked on a solo career, and as far as appearing on stage and vocal abilities concerned, no one was equal to him. He regularly attracted the attention of the public with his private life, which is talked about for years after his death.
He said Mary Austin was the love of his life, and the couple met when he was 24 and she was only 19. They got engaged four years later, at a time when his popularity was skyrocketing. He dedicated numerous songs to her, among which the most famous is "Love of my life". The band, but also Freddie himself, had more and more fans day by day, and the singer was more and more indulging in a debauched life.
After six years of relationship, they no longer talked about marriage and Mary concluded that something was wrong. Mercury kept claiming that he was just imagining and that everything was fine. At first, she thought he was having an affair with another woman, but in 1976 he decided to confess everything to her. “I’ll never forget that moment,” Mary said. He told her he was bisexual, but she knew he was gay.
They broke up but remained friends forever. It was to her that he left most of his fortune to, and he began a relationship with Jim Hutton in 1985. He stayed with him for the rest of his life, and he often said that they were kindred spirits and that their love rested on understanding and kindness. Hutton was also, like Freddie, HIV positive, and he found out in 1990. He passed away in 2010.
It was his illness that was the main topic of the world's tabloids, and he hid it for years. He initially denied having the virus, but he developed AIDS a year later. By 1990, rumors about his health deteriorating started, and in February of that year, the legendary musician made his last public appearance. The cover of the November 1990 tabloid The Sun claimed that it was official that Mercury was seriously ill. He and people close to him denied the story.
The music video for the song “These Are the Days of Our Lives,” the last one he recorded with Queen showed that Freddie is really not well. He looked completely different, and later band members talked about how he could barely get to the studio at the time due to illness. A great consolation in the last months of his life was Mary Austin and Jim Hutton, and on November 23, 1991, he announced to the media that he had AIDS.
Only a day later, the tragic news of his death spread around the world. Freddie Mercury has remained one of the most important personalities in the history of music to this day, and his songs are still at the top of the charts.
