Snapdragon X70 5G: the next-generation modem
Although SoCs are typically known for their CPU and GPU, the modem, such as this Snapdragon X70 5G, is an important component of the set because it is what distinguishes a device with numerous communication channels from an advanced calculator. Without the modem's connectivity, we'd be without cellular connectivity, but also WiFi and Bluetooth, thus isolating the gadget from the rest of the world.
Thus, among the numerous device announcements at MWC 2022, all of which are very interesting, we must not overlook Qualcomm's presentation of the Snapdragon X70 5G, the next-generation modem that will be responsible for providing wireless connectivity to a slew of next year's high-end smartphones, as we expect it to be the traveling companion of the future Snapdragon 8 Gen. 2.
The most notable feature of the Snapdragon X70 5G modem is that, for the first time, we are presented with a modem that will rely on artificial intelligence to manage bandwidth more efficiently, which according to Qualcomm will mean that devices equipped with it will be able to reach (theoretically, of course, this does not appear to be possible in the short and medium-term) speeds of up to 10 gigabits of download and 3.5 gigabits of upload in 5G connections, in addition to also improving latency.
The advancements brought about by the Snapdragon X70 5G and what Qualcomm refers to as the 5GIA Suite will also translate into gains in terms of coverage, connection stability, and even energy economy. A surprising set of enhancements that, when considered, lead us to believe that Qualcomm is not only thinking about smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
A modem as optimized as the company's announcement suggests has a considerably bigger market, as it appears to be a highly recommended alternative for situations where communication is critical, such as industrial equipment and linked automobiles. As a result, it is not unexpected that the Snapdragon X70 5G is found in more than just smartphones and devices.
It also stands out for being compatible with all of the bands utilized in 5G connectivity services around the world, covering the spectrum from 600 megahertz to 41 gigahertz, to which it also adds mmWave compatibility. As a result, we have a modem capable of providing global connectivity regardless of the geographical region in which the device that equips it is located. This can and will undoubtedly be a motivation for manufacturers to choose the Snapdragon X70 5G over other solutions.
Support for DSMA (Dual-SIM Dual-Active) is also included in the list of compatible technologies, allowing manufacturers to offer Dual-SIM technology in their devices, as well as support for architecture updates via software, making this Snapdragon X70 5G an exceptionally flexible solution that can thus be adapted to future needs, both of integrators and of 5G networks.
