In her testimony, the widow Vanessa Bryant recalled the morning of the accident. She said that the family assistant was the first to inform her about the accident that happened at 11:30, but she did not know at that time the condition of her husband Kobe and their daughter Gianna.
As she tried to call her husband with trembling hands, TMZ publicly announced the news of Kobe's death.
- Our assistant told me that there was an accident and that there were five survivors. I was holding the phone, I was trying to call my husband, and all those notifications started popping up on my phone: ‘RIP Kobe. RIP Kobe. RIP Kobe '- said Vanessa.
Vanessa did not believe the revelations at the time, she knew that there were five survivors in the accident and she hoped that her husband and daughter were among them. She got in the car and went to pick up her daughter Natalia (18).
- I picked up Natalia and told her that Dad and Gigi had an accident. 'Do not worry. They are certainly good because there are five survivors. I'm sure Dad and Gigi are fine ', I repeated to her - she openly recounted the worst moments of her life.
She was denied a helicopter ride due to bad weather conditions, so she drove with her daughter to the police station for an hour and a half. They arrived there around 1:30 p.m. They sat down and waited for news of Kobe and Gianna. After an uncertain wait, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva told them that Kobe and Gianna had died.
Vanessa was aware of what could happen because of her husband’s fame.
- If you can't bring my husband and child back, please don't have anyone take pictures of them. Please secure the area, ”she told the sheriff in fear that fans, drones, or helicopters would photograph the bodies of her husband and daughter.
The widow is currently suing the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for emotional pain and negligence during the investigation. She filed the chargeback in September last year after it was announced that first-aid workers allegedly shared unauthorized and disturbing photos of human remains taken at the scene of the accident.
However, in response to the lawsuit, county attorneys claimed the photos were ‘not given to the media and not published on the internet’.
