Cappadocia, a region located in central Turkey, is one of the most visited tourist destinations in this country. From year to year, it has become an unavoidable destination for tourists from all over the world.
Its old Persian name was Haspaduya which means 'Land of Beautiful Horses'. Cappadocia also has a rich Christian historical and cultural heritage. Underground settlements from the 4th century are in the cavities from unusual groups of rocks. Cappadocia is also rich with churches and monasteries from the Byzantine era.
In this area are the largest number of imposing formations formed after the eruption, now inactive, the volcanoes Erciyes Dağ (3916 m), Hasan Dağ (3253 m), and Melendiz (2963 m), which are believed to have erupted 9 and 3 million years ago.
Ballooning is very popular in Cappadocia and especially in the Göreme National Park. If you don't have balloon flight experience this is the perfect place for the first time.
Waking up is before dawn when it is dark because the best experience is to welcome dawn in a balloon. There will be more daily balloon departures during the full season. More than two thousand people are in the air, enjoying, every day. That number speaks about security and you have no need to worry. Before the flight, they give instructions on how to behave during the flight and landing, and in case of an accident.
Apart from the air, you will have to see Cappadocia from the perspective of a mole man. Namely, below the above-ground cities is a tangle of underground ones. The underground city of Derinkuyu is one of the largest in the world, and definitely, the largest city in Turkey. It goes to a depth of 60 m, spreads over 4.5 km, and it has 8 underground floors that once housed up to 20,000 people along with food and supplies. It was opened in 1969, and the exact period of its construction is unknown, but it is assumed that most of it was built during the Arab invasions of the area.
Underground cities were used for escape and life during the occupation of aboveground cities, but even when the situation calmed down the first two highest floors always served as storage due to very favorable and constant air temperature. In addition to Derinkuyu underground city, another smaller one has been opened and that is Kaymakli. The most visited part in Cappadocia is under the protection of UNESCO.
People carved houses, churches, and monasteries in the rocks. In Göreme are more than 30 churches and chapels that are carved into the rocks. In some of them, we can see beautiful frescoes from the Byzantine era. We suggest you to visit Cappadocia and you will not regret it.
