The Republic of the Philippines, as its official name suggests, was named after its former ruler, King Philip II of Spain. This island state counts seven thousand tropical islands and covers an area of 300,076 km², with a population of more than 86 million.
After Indonesia, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, and Japan, the Philippines is the fifth-largest island nation in the world.
The capital of the Philippines is Manila, which is also one of the world's most exciting capitals with over a million and a half inhabitants, and life in it is flowing literally 24 hours a day.
Here you will feel the ghosts of the past of Spanish rulers, and the old part of the city, once inhabited by wealthy Filipinos and Spaniards, is particularly interesting. Today, Manila is full of curious and occasional travelers who have arrived here in search of unusual experiences.
Outside the capital, which is, among other things, crowded with huge shopping malls, there are great places to visit.
One of them is Banaue, where we can see the famous rice terraces and is located in the middle of the mountains in North Luzon. Here you can find members of the Ifugao tribe who, in the last two thousand years, have built rice terraces from which they feed their families.
For a little deeper research, be sure to go to the Coron Islands, which are known for the sinking of the Japanese fleet from World War II, and an additional interesting attraction are the freshwater lakes within the island.
If by any chance you find yourself in Donsol, you may also meet the rulers of the bay, the whale-like sharks. But don’t worry, they are completely harmless to humans and feed exclusively on plankton which you will learn from local guides.
