The actor will celebrate his 60th birthday this year. He wore a blue suit and white shirt for the festival, while 51-year-old Jennifer Connelly opted for a long dress signed by Louis Vuitton. They were representing a sequel to 'Top Gun: Maverick'. This is a sequel to the legendary 1986 film that marked Tom Cruise's career, so it's no surprise that the sequel 'Top Gun: Maverick' sparked huge media interest.
The actor was also awarded with the most important prize at the festival - the Golden Palm - by President Pierre Lescure and received a standing ovation from those present. The Palme d'Or is considered one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry.
The plot of this sequel is set 30 years later. This time, Maverick found himself in the role of the instructor of new generations of pilots. This time they were played by Miles Teller, Glenn Powell, Monica Barbaro and Jay Ellis. Teller plays Bradley Rooster Bradshaw, the son of Maverick's best friend, the late Nick Goose Bradshaw. The title song from the movie 'Hold My Hand' was sung by Lady Gaga.
Cruise is known for performing his own stunts on set, and the actors in the upcoming film were thrilled with his professionalism. They were so delighted that Glen Powell called him a “machine”.
When Cruise was last time in Cannes for the premiere of ‘Far and Away’ with his then-wife Nicole Kidman, he was just one of many Hollywood stars. Thirty years later, he is the only one who can compete with the superhero franchises that now dominate the studios.
According to IndieWire, Cruise is "the last Hollywood movie star of its kind - it may be short, but it's still the biggest, in an age where most famous actors are only as big as their action figures."
