Dakota Johnson: 'It was psychotic'

Dakota Johnson described filming the hit erotic drama 'Fifty Shades of Gray' as 'psychotic' and revealed how she 'signed up to do a very different version of the film than one she ended up making'.

Johnson spoke to Vanity Fair about 'Fifty Shades of Grey', in which she starred alongside Jamie Dornan as Christian Gray. Two additional films, 'Fifty Shades Darker' and 'Fifty Shades Freed', were released in 2017 and 2018, with James Foley replacing Taylor-Johnson as director.

' I'm a sexual person and when I'm interested in something, I want to know a lot about it,' Dakota said and revealed: 'I signed up to do a completely different version of the film than the one we ended up shooting. I was young. I was 23 years old. So it was scary,' she revealed. 'It just became something crazy. There were many different disagreements. I've never been able to talk about it honestly because you want to promote the film in the right way, and I'm proud of what we ended up doing and that everything turned out the way it should, but it was awkward.' actress revealed.

The first problem arose when actor Charlie Hunnam dropped out of  'Fifty Shades of Gray' due to scheduling conflicts. His departure resulted in Jamie's entry into the lead role, and James' withdrawal from the original script.

Dakota said that the author exercised a lot of creative control, every day all day long over the production.

'There were parts of the books that just wouldn't have worked in the movie, like the internal monologues, which were incredibly cheesy at times,' she said. Dakota and director Sam Taylor-Johnson took it upon themselves to salvage parts of the first script, reworking certain scenes with old dialogue the night before shooting.

'We'd shoot the movie she (EL James) wanted to make, and then we'd shoot the movie we wanted to make,' she explained. ' It was chaos the whole time .'

When Taylor-Johnson left the franchise after the first film, director James Foley was brought in to helm the next two installments, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. Dakota somewhat cryptically described him as an ' interesting man ' who brought a ' different energy '.'There are things I still can't talk about because I don't want to hurt anyone's career and I don't want to damage anyone's reputation, but both Jamie and I were treated very well,' she said.

Despite long-running rumors that she and Jamie clashed behind the scenes, Dakota insisted that there wasn't a single moment where they didn't get along.'I know it's weird, but he's like a brother to me,' she stated.

When she was asked does she regret acting in those films, Dakota said: 'If I had known then how it would turn out, I don't think anyone would have done it. It would be, 'Oh, this is psychotic.' But no, I don't regret it .'
