Daniel Craig on leaving the role of James Bond
Daniel Craig: I wanted to kill him since Casino Royale...
Daniel Craig resigned from the role of James Bond after five films about the most renowned film spy. However, the British actor claims that he decided on his character's fate as early as his first Bond film, Casino Royale, in 2006.
"I was driving from the Berlin premiere of Casino Royale with producer Barbara Broccoli. I honestly thought I'd make one Bond film and then it would be over. But then we knew we had a hit. I realized how huge it was, so I told Barbara: How many more? Three? Four? She said: Four! I said: OK. Can I kill him then? She said: Yes," the 54-year-old actor told the Sunday Times.
That's exactly what happened in No Time to Die, Craig's fifth and final outing as James Bond. The 25th film in the franchise, which was released last year after an 18-month delay due to the covid-19 outbreak, ended with the death of a secret agent who chose to sacrifice himself for the benefit of his family.
'That's it,' I said. 'I don't want to do anything else,' " - Craig talks about his final film.
Nonetheless, he wanted to give Bond a heroic death, so he tasked Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who worked on the film's screenplay, with writing an ending that demonstrated Bond's compassion.
"The real tragedy is when you have absolutely no choice. We had to find a way to make his death not a choice. It was the happiest Bond ever because he found exactly what he was looking for. Like everyone on Earth, he was just looking for love," notes Craig.
"If we kill Bond, we can start over. I think Barbara thought that too. But MGM said, 'What are you talking about? Are you crazy?' There was reluctance. So we had to do it in secret, actually," said Craig.
Henry Cavill will be the new James Bond?
DAILY MAIL reports that actor Henry Cavill, who was fired from his role as Superman, could be the next James Bond. According to the British tabloid, the chances of The Witcher's actor succeeding Daniel Craig as the new secret agent 007 are increasing.
Although the popular British actor gave up the lead part in Netflix's smash series The Witcher to play the legendary superhero, it appears that the makers of Superman still prefer a younger actor in the role.
According to the media, this has enhanced Cavill's prospects of becoming the next Bond. According to the bookies, Aaron Taylor-Johnson remains the favorite to earn the role, while Cavill is in second place.
