Even men wore high heels, and women adore them!

Although many people think that heeled shoes were created for aesthetic reasons, in order for the person wearing them to be taller and more graceful, you were mistaken, because, as historians claim, heels were created for a very practical reason.

In the 15th century, the horse was the main means of transportation, and riders traveled great distances every day. To prevent their foot from slipping off the strap attached to the saddle, a high heel was designed. This is how footwear with a heel of three centimeters, which was also called "rider's heel", was created. They were similar to today's cowboy boots, the news magazine writes.

When were high-heeled shoes made?

During the first three decades of the 15th century, this heel changed shape. Over time, high-heeled shoes became everyday footwear, but only in backyards. At the end of the 16th century, men's shoes had heels of six to as much as nine centimeters. In 1533, Catherine, the wife of the Earl of Orleans, asked her shoemaker to make her shoes with heels, which would be beautiful, but which would at the same time make her look taller because she was very short. A shoemaker made her wooden shoes with a platform.

Heeled shoes soon became a fashion imperative of the French aristocracy. Very quickly, this trend was transferred beyond the borders of France. High heels were increasingly in demand and became a symbol of wealth and prestige during the 17th and 18th centuries.

After the French Revolution, out of protest over class differences, high heels fell into oblivion and flat shoes became fashionable again. This was the case until the middle of the 19th century, when high heels returned, mostly among members of the fairer sex.
