Google's flip smartphone could arrive next year
After working on prototypes for the past few years, Google is reportedly planning to introduce a foldable Pixel smartphone in 2022.
According to the code hidden in the Google Camera app, the phone is being developed under the code name Pipit. So far there are no specific details about its design and features, but the app reveals something about the cameras.
Reportedly, the device will have a 12.2 MP main camera, which Google used for devices that came between the Pixel 3 and Pixel 5 models, while the new Pixel 6 series has a 50 MP main camera.
In addition, Pipit will use the same ultra-wide 12 MP camera (IMX386) as the current Pixels, while there will be two 8 MP IMX355 sensors on the front. They will probably be located on both sides of the case so that selfie photos can be taken regardless of whether the device is folded or unfolded.
A slightly older camera makes sense because the one on the Pixel 6 requires a bulging strip on the back to make room for its sensors. Size is the problem with flip phones, so the camera's sensors must have as thin a profile as possible.
Samsung has also used weaker cameras for flip phones compared to those of the S series. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 does not have as powerful a camera as the Galaxy S21 series.
The information hidden in the app also contains the term “isPixel2022Foldable,” indicating that Google plans to introduce smartphones next year. A similar thing has happened in the past.
Google recently announced a version of Android for tablets and flip devices, and the first public version of Android 12L is expected next year.
