Helen Mirren at the beginning of her career: The role of Cleopatra was a stepping stone
Helen Mirren is one of the best actresses of today, and her career began in 1965 when she played Cleopatra at the National Youth Theater in London.
The play “Antony and Cleopatra” was written by William Shakespeare and in 1965 it was directed by Michael Croft. Helen Mirren says that this role was a stepping stone in her career and that it led to the signing of a contract with agent Al Parker. She was only 20 at the time.
"During my third year at the National Youth Theater, I was offered the role of Cleopatra. I had to learn to overcome my shyness. I was in an environment full of testosterone. I loved the power the role gave me. Of course, it's always good to be a queen," Mirren said.

She also mentioned other difficulties she encountered while working on the play.
"I tried to ignore reality and indulge in a world of imagination. I had to make a wig and put on make-up myself. I had a serious cold when we performed at the Old Vic Theater seven nights in a row. That role was a turning point in my life," she concluded.
