'I tried not to panic' - Sofia Vergara opens up about thyroid cancer diagnosis at the age of 28

Actress and TV host Sofia Vergara was 28 years old when, after a routine check-up, doctors told her that she had thyroid cancer. While speaking at a charity event Stand Up to Cancer this Saturday, Vergara (49) admitted that she would never be able to forget that moment. The actress remembered everything and pointed out how important it was for people to stick together when everything starts going downhill.

"At the age of 28 and during a routine check-up, my doctor noticed a lump on my neck. I did a few tests and then I found out what it was all about. Thyroid cancer… When you are young, when you hear the word "cancer", your mind goes to so many places. You start thinking about so many things. But I tried not to panic. I decided to get well and to be well informed. So I read everything I could, just to find out as much as possible" she said.

During that period, by the way, Sofia was a single mother and only at the beginning of her career. Just nine years later she got the role of Gloria in the famous series 'Modern Family'. Thanks to the show, very few people today don't know who Sofia Vergara is.

Fortunately, Vergara was diagnosed on time, so she managed to beat cancer relatively quickly. When she recovered, however, she was most grateful to her family, apart from the doctors, because they held on tight and together like never before.

I learned a lot during that time, not just about thyroid cancer but I also learned that in times of crisis, we’re better together," Vergara said, adding that the COVID-19 pandemic also showed that we need each other in times of crisis. We’re better together and if we’re going to end cancer, it’s going to require a team effort,” Vergara concluded.

Let us remind you, Sofia Vergara is not the only 'Modern Family' cast member who had suffered from this vicious disease. HERE you can read about Jesse Tyler Ferguson's (Mitchell) ongoing struggle with skin cancer.
