Instagram is testing the feature that reminds you to take a break from constantly scrolling

Instagram is acting in line with its promise to promote healthier habits on social media. The head of the social network, Adam Mosseri, revealed that Instagram started testing its suggested function "Take a break" this week.

Instagram is testing the feature that reminds you to take a break from constantly scrolling

Turn 'take a break' feature on and the app will remind you to do something else after 10, 20, or 30 minutes, anything that will separate you a little from your phone, or at least from the app.

Adam Mosseri hoped to launch this feature for everyone in December, and if you’re part of the beta group, you’ll get the feature these days. He emphasized that Instagram will "receive feedback" and improve the design, so you may not have to worry if it doesn't work as you hoped, Engadget reports.

Maybe there is already room for improvement. Like the previous time limit function, Pause does not apply pauses very strictly. You can simply tap "done" and continue navigating through the app. If you want stricter restrictions right away, you’ll need to turn to digital health or parental control features like iOS screen time or Android digital well-being to get yourself or your child to do something else.

This is an improvement though and can help if you just need a little reminder to back away. It’s not that Instagram or its umbrella company Meta had a choice. The company is under pressure from regulator and whistleblower Francis Haugen, who has accused Meta of focusing too much on attracting customers and not enough on caring for them. “Take a break” is a step towards a more responsible approach - it’s just a question of whether that step is big enough or not.
