Johnny Depp: 'Hollywood is boycotting me for breaking up with Amber'
The famous actor said in an interview that he thinks Hollywood is boycotting him and his films because of a public divorce, during which he was accused of abusing his wife.
Actor Johnny Depp, 49, spoke openly about the Hollywood boycott that ensued after his ex-wife Amber Heard, 35, accused him of physical violence.
Johnny claims Hollywood is boycotting him because of the ‘inconveniences’ that came out during his break-up with Amber in 2016, where the media declared him a ‘woman abuser’. The actor denies these claims.
He spoke to the Sunday Times about his new film ‘Minamata’ which has not yet appeared in US cinemas, despite being premiered late last year at the Berlinale.
- Some movies touch people, and this one affects those in Minamata and people who experience similar things. And about anything ... about that Hollywood boycott of me? One man, one actor in an awkward and messy situation, the last few years? Johnny told the Sunday Times .
Depp plays photojournalist W. Eugene Smith and follows his work in Japan during the 1970s. Through his reports, he documented mercury poisoning in the city of Minamata in Japan, for which a local factory was responsible.
- We promised these people that the film would respect them. I think we kept our part of the deal, so those behind us should keep theirs, too - Johnny commented.
The film’s director Andrew Levitas, 43, supports Depp’s accusations and wrote a letter last month claiming that ‘Minamata’ is ‘buried’ due to the actor’s legal problems.
“The American screening of the film does not yet have a specific date,” a spokesman for MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) Studios, which holds the rights to screen the film, told Deadline.
