After more than 30 years, singers Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan will once again play Scott and Charlene in the Australian television series "Neighbours".
Their return to Ramsey Street in the fictional suburb of Melbourne, Erinsburg, will happen after it was announced that the last season of the series will be broadcast this summer, after 37 years of showing.
Sharing a message on the series’ official Twitter account, executive producer Jason Herbison wrote that they will play a very special role" in the series' finale. "Scott and Charlene are a top pair of 'Neighbors' and it wouldn't be right to end the series without them."
Minogue and Donovan also posted a photo on their Instagram accounts that looks like part of the script of the series. The series aired for the first time in 1985, and the favorite couple played Scott and Charlene until their withdrawal from the roles in 1988 and 1989. The episode of their wedding was watched by more than two million viewers in Australia when it was first broadcast in 1987, and by almost 20 million people when it was shown in Great Britain the following year.
Both Kylie and Jason became famous after appearing in this soap opera. Minogue made an extremely successful career, becoming one of the most popular pop singers in the world, and she stated that she would be "forever grateful" for playing in the series. Donovan also embarked on a music career. He appeared in musicals and had a starring role in the series "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" in the 1990s.
Their duet song "Especially For You" is one of the greatest hits of the eighties of the last century. "Neighbours" has been broadcast on British Channel 5 for more than a decade, and was previously broadcast on the BBC. Earlier this year, Channel 5 announced that it was withdrawing the series from the schedule. That decision left the producers without finances because the British network was a key partner of the series.
The producers later said that they were very sorry, but that they have no other option but to stop the show. When the news arrived that the filming of the series would stop, Donovan said that it was sad, but that it was time for the series to be celebrated. His father Terence played Doug Willis in the series, and his daughter Jemma is part of the current cast.
The series also started the careers of Hollywood stars, including Margot Robbie, Liam Hemsworth, and Guy Pearce, as well as singer Natalie Imbruglia and Delta Goodrem.
