I May Destroy You’, Michaela Coel’s HBO drama about sexual abuse that questions the issue of consent was not nominated for a Golden Globe earlier this year which surprised and even angered many. The series based on the author's own experiences was praised as one of the most interesting and influential, so she was expected to receive well-deserved recognition.

The series still won a BAFTA, and now Coel, who wrote the series and played its main character, has won her first Emmy. Visibly moved, she climbed onto the stage and received the screenplay award. In doing so, she read her speech without undue pathos, which delighted everyone in the audience.

She invited other writers to write a story that scares them, makes them feel insecure, that is not pleasant. "I challenge you," Coel said.

‘I May Destroy You’ follows the life of writer Arabella who wakes up one morning with an injury and a very vague memory of a sexual assault, and it is an event that Coel herself experienced. A rape drug was inserted into her drink, after which she was attacked by an unknown man on a night out.

At the end of her speech, the author dedicated the award to "all those who have been victims of sexual assault." After that, the audience got up and Michaela got the longest standing ovation last night.
