New boycot of the 'Sex and the City'
What happened?
‘Sex and the City’ has released a new sequel of the series called ‘And Just Like That’ some time ago. Viewers around the world had different opinions on the new series, but the newest one coming from the Russian people wasn’t so positive at all. Russian viewers accused HBO of the hypocrisy boycotting the series and they have launched a petition against it. The viewers are extremely mad at HBO and they are asking for an official apology from the production.
Critical episode
There is a serious reason following this rage of the Russian viewers. Sarah Jessica Parker AKA Carrie Bradshaw has a new young neighbor living next door to her and she is wondering about the girl. She is wondering how such a young girl has money to rent an apartment in that part of Manhattan. Her friend in the show replies: “She’s probably a Russian prostitute, that’s common.” That scene from the eighth episode of the series was enough to enrage the viewers from Russia who claim that the screenwriters are rude and hypocritical.
The petition
Russians were insulted to that extent that they have made a flood of comments on HBO’s Instagram profile. Using several hash tags they claim that the network has no tolerance and that they approve of double standards. Russians who live in the USA have launched a petition demanding from HBO to announce the official apology to all Russians. HBO was removing comments as fast as they could but they couldn’t handle the wrath of many offended Russians.
"We are Russian-speaking women who felt offended when they watched the episode. Russian-speaking women are hardworking, educated and intelligent. The message you broadcast is so insulting, humiliating and full of disrespect. They are trying to get rid of this horrible stereotype. They work hard, study and support their families, and in one of your series, you casually call them whores” claims a man from the Russian community.
Netflix's comment on the matter
Similar situation happened last month while broadcasting new series “Emily in Paris” on Netflix, where the main character is in the shops with a woman from Ukraine, who actually steals few things and refuses to return them to the store. These are not the only cases where people from these countries were pictured as prostitutes, thieves, etc.
Netflix platform has promised to pay attention to the matter more, and that they will try to exclude any screenwriters and people who try to offend people from other cultures.
