Julianne Moore has her eye on the throne in the new teaser trailer for the mini-series "Mary & George".Through seven episodes, Moore will play the ambitious Mary Villiers, who has a desire for power, but as a woman in England in the Jacobin period, she will never be able to achieve it.
However, Mary has a son, George ( Nicholas Galitzine ), who is handsome, charismatic, and completely devoted to his mother. He is there to fulfill her every wish. Everything turns in their favor when George catches the attention of King James I ( Tony Curran ).
The series is based on true characters. Mary Beaumont was penniless when she married wealthy farmer Sir George Villiers, with whom she had four children. She saw the greatest potential in her second son, George, and provided him with the best possible education. He attracted the attention of the new English king James I and became his favorite. Allegedly, this favoritism sometimes included the bringing of an intimate nature.
George managed to achieve great political power and became the first Duke of Buckingham and also befriended James' son Charles and continued to work on his influence when Charles took the throne. But the plans to take over more power, which his mother had, did not come true in the end.
The series is based on the book The King's Assassin, written by Benjamin Woolley. Combining vivid characterization and a strong narrative with historical scholarship and forensic investigation, Woolley tells the story of King James’s death, and of the captivating figure at its center. What emerges is a compelling portrait of a royal favorite whose charisma overwhelmed those around him and, ultimately, himself.
The series was created by DC Moore and directed by Oliver Hermanus. "Mary & George" will arrive sometime next year, but no exact date has been revealed yet.
