New true-crime shows that'll give you chills

We recently wrote about the most exciting series that should arrive in 2022. Although the list is full of exciting streaming or TV titles, the true-crime genre that has infatuated the world in recent years deserves its own list. This year we are looking forward to series of documentary type or feature series based on real crime stories that once filled media columns and front pages of various portals around the world.

NEW TRUE-CRIME SERIES TO MARK 2022

The popularity of true-crime is not surprising, ultimately the key is in truly bizarre, extraordinary and sometimes occult testimonies and events that naturally attract the attention of the audience, but the past decade has shown that when such stories merge with top production and acting performances, content is created that conquers social networks at lightning speed and goes viral.

We have years ahead of us during which we will really get a rich repertoire of true-crime films or series, and some are coming to us already during this month.

FOUR LIVES

If the production of a crime drama is signed by a BBC crew, expectations are automatically higher. The excitement begins with an already excellent cast consisting of Stephen Merchang, Sheridan Smith and Jaime Winstone, and it is a three-episode mini-series that follows the story of real serial killer Stephen Port. Between 2014 and 2015, Port preyed on men on an online dating app and killed four of them. The series mostly revolves from the perspective of police efforts that didn't originally bear fruit and people close to the victims of this gruesome serial killer. It was already released on January 3, and the first reactions of TV critics are mostly positive.

INVENTING ANNA

We assume this will be Netflix's first major true-crime feature series of 2022. It’s been talked about for months, and scenes from the set are stealing attention. Inventing Anna tells the simply incredible story of Anna Delvey, a fraudster who pushes herself to the top of the social ladder in New York with lies of success, all the while claiming to be a wealthy German heiress. Julia Garner, one of the most interesting actresses of the younger generation, will play the lead role, and the show is even more exciting since it was produced by Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away With Murder, Bridgerton and many other TV hits). It will be released on Netflix on February 11!

LOVE and DEATH

Love and Death arrives on HBO Max , a series that brings Elizabeth Olsen back to screen, who delighted audiences and critics on WandaVision earlier this year. The series features Candy Montgomery, a housewife girl who committed a crime in 1980 that cowered America and became everything the media wrote about. Based on newspaper articles, most notably the one in the Texas Monthly newspaper and the book Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs, the series follows a quiet town where nothing overly intriguing happens and residents spend time in church and relaxed gatherings, until Candy Montgomery commits murder against her best friend from the church community, and her motives are quite creepy.

TINDER SWINDLER

It doesn't yet have an exact release date, but it's known that this documentary is due out during February on Netflix. If you've also seen Don't F*** With Cats, which many say is the best limited true-crime series to date, then be sure to pay attention to Tinder Swindler also directed by Felicity Morris. The documentary tells the story of fraudster Shimon Hayut, who pretended to be Russian billionaire Simon Leviev through a Tinder app only to extract thousands and thousands of dollars from the women he set out on. After a police investigation, Hayut was jailed, but not for long, and it quickly turned out he wasn't done with booby traps and scams.

THE DROPOUT

A few years ago, America was rocked by a scandal involving Theranos and its president, Elizabeth Holmes, who was previously called the new Steve Jobs, an absolute genius and the youngest self-made billionaire in history by the media, previously scandal-riddled. At the age of 30, Elizabeth Holmes was at her peak – she dropped out of college and founded a company worth more than $9 billion, all thanks to a revolutionary way of testing blood that could supposedly instantly recognize diabetes and tumors. However, it took only a year for the whole farce to fail. Produced by Hulu, the series will feature Amanda Seyfried and Kate McKinnon as Elizabeth Holmes and will follow the dizzying rise and even heavier decline of this woman and her company. It premieres on March 3, 2022.

THE STAIRCASE

In 2004, the mini-series The Staircase became one of the most famous true-crime docs in general. It was trying to portray the gruesome story of Michael Peterson, the author of numerous crime novels and thrillers who was accused in the 2000s of murdering his wife Kathleen, who was found dead at the bottom of a stairwell in their home. The series, directed by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, has received numerous acclaim and accolades, and now we have a feature version of this case. Starring the ingenious Colin Firth as Michael Peterson and Toni Collette as his wife, the show will showcase in a new way the tapeworm into which the crime has evolved. The show is scheduled for release this year on HBO Max.

THE THING ABOUT PAM

In addition to Colin Firth, on small screens arrives also Renee Zellweger. After triumphing as Judy Garland in Judy two years ago, Zellweger's career is once again constantly in the spotlight. In 2022, we will also watch her in the television series The Thing About Pam, on which, in addition to acting, she also works as one of the producers. The series follows the murder of Betsy Faria, of which was her husband Russ acussed, who, despite claims of innocence, was jailed. When his indictment was overturned, a whole avalanche of events was triggered that revealed incredible fraud and intrigue, and the only one who connected to them all was Pam Hupp (Rene Zellweger).
