Pfizer donating vaccines to save the Olympics!
During the recent allegations of Japan wanting to cancel the upcoming Olympic Games, Pfizer offered to donate thousands of doses of their COVID-19 vaccines so the athletes could get vaccinated and hopefully help save the Olympic!
Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech SE made an agreement and introduced their plan yesterday. If everything goes right they intend to provide the doses to all participating athletes of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.
The goal is to get the athletes vaccinated as fast as possible and to ensure that they all get both doses of the vaccine before their arrival in Tokyo, scheduled for July 23.
However, of course, nothing can go without problems.
The first issue is that the interval between doses, as suggested by the CDC, should be 21 days.
Secondly, there have been reports of a petition getting more and more popular in Japan, and the goal is to cancel the Olympics completely out of fear of an outbreak.
The petition is titled “Cancel the Tokyo Olympics to Protect Our Lives" and in a few days, it gathered tens of thousands of signatures.
Obviously, the citizens are concerned about people flying in from all over the world and the natural thought is that the outcome of this gathering will be a mass spreading of the virus which will then lead to a spike in COVID-19 cases.
That’s where Pfizer comes in. The vaccine should be able to stop the possibility of an outbreak, however, it all comes down to athletes and whether they actually get the said vaccine.
Thomas Bach, IOC President also issued a statement in which he confirmed that this donation represents a helping tool so the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 are made safe and secure for everyone participating.
