The film is based on the story created by Souza and Baldwin, which follows the infamous outlaw Harland Rust with a bounty on his head. When his grandson Lucas is ironically sentenced to be hanged for negligent homicide, Rust travels to Kansas to free him from prison. The two have to flee together from legendary Marshal Wood Helm and bounty hunter Fenton Preacher Lang, who are after them.

On IMDb, they state that Lucas is a 13-year-old boy who was left to fend for himself and his younger brother after the death of their parents in Kansas in the 1880s. The deeply hidden secrets will finally be revealed and the unexpected family connection is revealed between them as they try to survive.

Filming for "Rust" was scheduled to resume in early November, according to a statement from the New Mexico Film Office.
