The best vintage Oscar look: Julia Roberts

The appearance of Julia Roberts in a Valentino fashion house dress at the 2001 Oscars is one of the most memorable outfits from the red carpet. The dress she wore then today also has its own page on Wikipedia.

The long black dress has one striking front white stripe that turns into two, V-shaped at the neckline, and on the back, there is a mosaic of many ribbons of the same thickness and color.

The dress that evokes the golden age of Hollywood was designed by Valentino Garavani in 1992 for his collection, and the dress was then stored in his archive.

There it was spotted by Valentino’s assistant Cristina Viera, who knew Debbie Mason, stylist of Julia Roberts. Days before the Oscars, the famous actress tried on dresses by many famous designers, but she was not impressed with any of them.

A week before the award, Cristina informed Debbie that she had the right dress for Julia and the actress came to Valentine’s boutique in Beverly Hills to try it on. It was immediately clear to everyone that the beautiful black vintage model is truly a hit.

Julia Roberts wore the dress to the 73rd Academy Awards, held March 25, 2001, in Los Angeles. That year, she was nominated in the Best Leading Actress category for Steven Soderbergh’s “Erin Brockovich,” which was inspired by the true story of the lawsuit against the energy corporation. And she won a golden statuette for the first time in her career.

“I’ve dressed a lot of people in my career, but I have to be honest. The person who made me very happy was Julia Roberts. I watched her on television when she won an Oscar and I was just excited about her wearing my dress”, legendary fashion master Valentino Garavani once said.

The dresses that famous women wear on red carpets are very often just borrowed and the stars have to return them to the designers later. But Julia Roberts was lucky to be able to keep her dress.

In an interview with People magazine, she also revealed what she did with the dress - she stored it in a safe place for a very sweet reason. Namely, the actress keeps the cult creation for her now 17-year-old daughter Hazel so that she could wear it one day.

I keep the dress under the bed, in a box. I have a small space in my house that my husband calls a "heritage collection," the Oscar winner said, adding that her husband Daniel Moder thought their daughter would not want her mother's old things, but she kept it just in case.
