The film about Golda Meir caused controversy!
The film about Golda Meir, played by Helen Mirren, caused controversy due to the casting of the actress.
A long-anticipated movie about Israel's only female prime minister, Goldi Meir, played on the big screen by Helen Mirren, will have its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February. Organizers of the Berlin Film Festival confirmed this information. But what happened? The director's decision to choose Helen Mirren, who is not Jewish, for the role of Meir, one of the most important figures in Israeli history, caused interest, but also controversy.
The choice of the actress caused controversy!
British colleague Maureen Lipman (Pianist), who is also a well-known fighter against anti-Semitism, told the Jewish Chronicle that Goldi Meir's religion was an integral part of her personality and that it did not seem right to her to be played by someone who was not Jewish.
"I'm sure Helen will be great, but Ben Kingsley wouldn't be allowed to play Nelson Mandela. It's not done," she said, referring to the actor of English-Indian descent who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Gandhi.
Mirren, winner of the Oscar for the role of Elizabeth II. in The Queen, considers such questions legitimate and stated that she herself questioned whether it was appropriate for her to play Meir. Last year, she told the Daily Mail that she told Israeli director Guy Nattiv to think carefully about whether she was the right person for the role. "But he wanted me in that role and we started filming," she stated.

One of the signatories of Israel's declaration of independence, Golda Meir was prime minister from 1969 to 1974 and the Yom Kippur War marked her reign in 1973 when Egypt and Syria suddenly attacked Israel. Golda, a film set in that period, will be screened out of competition in Berlin.
The Berlinale, the first European festival of the year, opens on February 16. The jury is chaired by American actress Kristen Stewart, and director Steven Spielberg will receive an honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement.
