Follieri was arrested on charges of defrauding investors out of millions of dollars by pretending to be a Vatican real estate agent. Anne was not charged with any crime, and after previously pleading guilty, Raffaello was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.

The actress and the real estate agent met in 2004 at dinner through mutual friends. They appeared together at various events and Hathaway did not hide how happy she is with Follieri. This is nothing unusual considering that he tried to please her in everything. As Raffaello told in an exclusive interview, he took Anne on trips around the world and they enjoyed the most expensive and luxurious hotels.
'I was 25 years old when we met in 2004. We had a lot of happy moments. I thought there were no limits for me,' he said.
He noted that they had a fiery relationship with passionate reconciliations and numerous gifts he gave the actress, including stunning sapphire and diamond earrings, a Cartier emerald and pearl necklace and a topaz diamond bracelet. While he showered her with expensive gifts, the actress gave Raffaello a cute, plastic frog that was a reminder of a fairy tale where a princess kisses a frog and he becomes a handsome prince. The relationship between the actress and the Italian was wonderful until June 24, 2008, when he was arrested for fraud.
'That night, Annie called me from Los Angeles where she had a press conference for the movie 'Get Smart'. We talked for 10 minutes on the phone about when she could come home. If I remember her last words were, 'I will love you forever' and then we ended the call. That was at two in the morning on June 24, 2008. At six in the morning, I was arrested. I never spoke to Annie again,' said Follieri.
He explained that he does not feel any bitterness towards his ex-girlfriend, but he is hurt by the way their relationship ended. Since his arrest, he has had no contact with the actress he loved, not even a message of support as he 'shattered into a thousand pieces' in prison.
'I think she made a business decision. She realized that the most important thing for her is to save her career. I'm not bitter. I'm not angry, but I'm hurt,' he said.
