Uma Thurman, 52, recently wrote an emotional letter about her abortion at the age of 15, calling for the repeal of strict law. The actress wrote a text for the Washington Post in which she called abortion her ‘darkest secret’ and revealed that she got pregnant with an older man.
‘I followed the course of the radical anti-abortion law in Texas with great sadness. Now, in the hope that I will draw the flames of controversy from vulnerable women who will be immediately affected by this law, I share my experience. You may not be interested in the opinion of an actress, but given this shameful move, I feel it is my responsibility to stand up for women. I started my acting career at the age of 15, working in an environment where I was often the only child in the room. In my late teens, I accidentally got pregnant with a much older man. I lived in Europe, away from my family, and was getting ready to start a career. I struggled to figure out what to do. I wanted to keep the baby, but how? ', Uma wrote. Thurman has spoken of her abortion in previous years as well, adding that the Texas ban law is a horror. She initially wanted to keep the child, but after talking to her parents, she changed her mind.

‘They asked me about the status of my relationship, which was not sustainable and warned me how difficult it would be for me as a teenager to raise a child on my own. My childhood fantasy about motherhood was quickly corrected as I weighed my answers to their very precise questions. I was just starting my career and didn’t have the financial power to secure a stable home, not even for myself. We decided as a family that I couldn’t get through the pregnancy and agreed that termination was the right choice. My heart was broken, ' said the actress. But she thinks it helped her become the mother she wanted to be.
‘The abortion I had as a teenager was the hardest decision of my life, the one that caused me anxiety then and I am sad even now, but it was a journey into a life full of joy and love that I experienced. The decision not to keep that early pregnancy allowed me to grow up and become the mother I wanted and should be, ' Uma explained.
