The worst films in 2022 - Part two

The tastes of the audience and critics often do not coincide when it comes to film productions, but sometimes they find a common language. This is the case with the selection of films made for the end of 2022 by the authors of Variety magazine, Owen Gleiberman and Peter Debruge, who singled out five films that disappointed them the most this year.

Here's their pick (part two) of the "worst" movies of 2022:

"Three thousand years of longing"

The long-awaited film "Three Thousand Years of Longing" is based on AS Bayet's short story "The Giant in the Nightingale's Eye", which director George Miller read more than twenty years ago and dreamed of making it into a film all that time.

In the film, we meet Alitea (Swinton), a lonely Englishwoman who finds a beautiful bottle during a trip to Istanbul. Upon returning home, she tries to clean it, but a magical creature, Jean (Elba), emerges from it, promising to grant her three wishes.

But, as viewers have the opportunity to find out, Altea is not thrilled with the opportunity that is presented to her. She becomes worried and wonders how the whole "wish fulfillment" process might affect her life. To help her decide, Gene shows her visions from his past and what could happen if she finally agrees.

The critics, however, found watching the film "tough", and they also assessed that the love story "was copied" from a completely different film.

"Blonde"

"Blonde" is an adaptation of the Joyce Carol Oates novel based on the biography of the legendary Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe with Ana De Armas in the lead role. And although the film was initially promising, the audience eventually criticized it for actually straying from what is otherwise known about the life of the film diva and for presenting her as a helpless victim.

"The way in which Andrew Dominik has constructed this interpretation of famous photographs of the star ensures that every time we see the original images, they will be tainted by subconscious connections with this ugly, inauthentic portrait," says critic Peter Debrugge.

"Bigbug"

The French sci-fi comedy of director Jean-Pierre Genet, author of the famous "Amelia Poulin", is not something that we could expect from his oeuvre at first sight.

In "Bigbug" we see the world in 2045 when humanity relies on artificial intelligence to fulfill any of its needs.

In such an environment, four house robots suddenly decide to take their masters hostage. And although such a premise may be interesting to some, the audience gave it an average rating of only 5.5.
