Yellowstone 1923 – Spreading the story of modern cowboys
Back to the ranch!
The Yellowstone world is growing, and the latest addition will center on the Dutton family's second generation.
Following the success of the first spinoff, 1883, Paramount+ announced another limited series, 1932, in February 2022. While 1883 focused on the Duttons' first generation, who founded the family's large ranch in Montana, 1932 will focus on their descendants. (The streaming provider revealed in June 2022 that the show's title has been changed to 1923.)
1923 will "explore the early twentieth century when pandemics, a historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression decimated the mountain west and the Duttons who call it home," according to the streaming service's official description.
Yellowstone's first installment follows ranch patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his children Kayce (Luke Grimes), Beth (Kelly Reilly), and Jamie (Wes Bentley) as they fight off developers and government authorities who want to cut into the family's earnings.
Yellowstone has become one of the most popular cable television series since its debut in 2018. Even two-time Oscar winner Costner was ecstatic with the series' remarkable success.
“I couldn't have predicted its popularity or looked five years ahead, but I'm never surprised what quality can turn into,” he told Deadline in February 2022. “Being popular and really good don't have to be mutually exclusive. And so, I'm pleasantly surprised."
Yellowstone is a modern twist on Westerns, although creator Taylor Sheridan was inspired by media set during the American Civil War. In May 2022, Paramount+ announced that Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren would star in unspecified characters in the new series. The pair previously collaborated on The Mosquito Coast in 1986.
The official synopsis for 1923 indicates that it will follow the Dutton family as they try to keep the ranch running following the 1918 flu pandemic and the Great Depression. Ford and Mirren will most likely play the Dutton family's forefathers, but it is unclear how they are linked to John and his children.
Tim McGraw played John's great-grandfather James in 1883, thus it appears that 1923 will focus on John's grandparents.
