Did Nelly Furtado go off the map?
The Canadian singer left her music career, but also world fame.
Furtado was born on December 2, 1978, in the city of Victoria, British Columbia (one of the ten Canadian provinces). Her parents, Antonio Jose Furtado and Maria Manuela Furtado are from the island of St. Miguel (Azores), but they had to migrate to Canada in the late 1960s. Singer Nelly Furtado often emphasized her Portuguese origin, and at the age of four, she started singing in this language.
She gained world fame with hits from the early 2000s that still revolve nostalgically on many individual playlists - "I'm Like A Bird", "Promiscuous" and the legendary "Maneater". However, after holding the enviable place of the world-famous singer for over five years and after being at the top of all music charts, she suddenly disappeared "overnight".
The Canadian singer left her music career, but also world fame, because, as she says, she suffered a nervous breakdown in 2006. "I had a nervous breakdown on stage," she later told in an interview. "I was on the 'Loose' tour with my daughter. I was, at the same time, a mother and a singer on the road," she added.

Then, during one performance on tour, she went on stage and realized that she was under a lot of stress, and the pressure was too great. "I actually cried while singing two songs. That's when I decided to take a break from music and go home. It wasn't until I actually entered my home that I realized that my family was all I needed." she said. She pointed out that she "shot high" too much, and that she did not understand how much stress she was struggling with. She admitted that she simply could no longer withstand the pressure of fame, but also of a potentially brilliant career.
"It was too much in such a short time," she added: "After two years of intense touring and concerts, I would spend hours at my home in Los Angeles, confused." She released her solo album “The Ride” in 2017, but it didn’t go well. It managed to sell only 1,814 copies across America.
Where is Nelly Furtado now?
After unsuccessfully trying to return to the music scene with the album "The Ride", the Canadian singer soon realized that she no longer swims in musical waters, or rather, in new trends, and that she does not want to change her personal expression for the sake of potential fame. She decided to start her own publishing house, because, as she says, she wants to help young artists have all the rights over their songs.
On that occasion, she stated for "Forbes" magazine that she is satisfied with the final outcome of her professional career. "The moment when I founded my own record label was crucial for me because I finally felt like I owned my own songs," she concluded.
