Famous comedian at the Golden Globes
Jerrod Carmichael opened the awards with a joke "I'm only here because I'm black".
Comedian and Golden Globes presenter Jerrod Carmichael kicked off the ceremony with a jab at the event's organizers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
"I'll tell you why I'm here: I'm here because I'm black," Carmichael explained. By the way, this was the first Golden Globe Awards since the 2020 HFPA was chastised for its lack of diversity and corrupt financial dealings.
"I will remind everyone in this room. The Golden Globes did not take place last year, and I don't want to say that this is a racist organization, but there was not a single black person in it until George Floyd died. There, you have the information and now you think what you want " Carmichael said in his opening monologue and then described what it was like to be invited to lead the ceremony.
"I'm sitting at home, drinking tea, and my friend Stephen Hill calls me. He says, 'Jerrod, I'm a producer at the Golden Globes, and I'd be honored if you hosted.' I thought, 'wow, one minute I'm drinking tea at home, and already in the second I was invited to be the blackface of a white organization'. Life just surprises you sometimes," Carmichael joked.
"I said to Stephen, 'I'm torn right now. I'll be honest with you, are you calling me to host the show just because I'm black? He said, 'Jerrod, I'm calling you because you're talented, charming and because you're an of the greatest comedians of his generation'. But hey, what does he know, Stephen is black too. He's producing this show just because he's black and nobody's going to tell him why he's here," Carmichael stated.
He then continued to joke about the organizers, telling how he got into a moral dilemma about whether he should host the Golden Globes or not. "I asked a friend if I should host the show, and she asked me how much I was going to make. She said, 'Jerrod, how much are they going to pay you?' a good suit and take those white people's money," the comedian recounted.
However, he still hasn't stopped criticizing the HFPA. He said he was proud of his decision until he received an email from the organizers inviting him to sit down one-on-one with one of their representatives. "I told them 'no thank you.' I know it's kind of a trap," Carmichael said.
Eddie Murphy mocked Will Smith for slapping
While winning the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes, actor and comedian Eddie Murphy issued advice to all comedians. "Don't talk about Will Smith's wife," is the advise. With his joke, he alluded to the event at last year's Oscars, when Will Smith smacked Chris Rock after a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.
