HP Omen 17: 16-core Core i9-12900HX CPU

The latest component of the new version of the HP Omen 17 gaming laptop is the Core i9-12900HX processor. This CPU had previously been seen on the Geekbench test site placed in a Lenovo computer, but this is the first time it has been validated by a manufacturer.

In February, Intel released the U-series and P-series mobile processors to address the low-power, lightweight model category. It had previously introduced the enthusiast-grade H-series with TDPs of up to 45 watts. A huge variety of variants to cover all market categories in laptops, which are the best-selling PCs.

Core i9-12900HX, the most powerful for laptops

However, the Alder Lake hybrid architecture can scale pretty well for more, and Intel is working on it. The Core i9-12900HX is the best performance CPU of the new generation thus far, and the first to have 16 cores, exceeding the H-series' 14 cores. It has 8 high-performance cores and 8 efficient cores for a total of 24 threads. It contains 30 Mbytes of third-level cache and a turbo mode frequency of 5 GHz.

Based on recent performance statistics, this chip would greatly outperform AMD's top-of-the-line laptop processor, the Ryzen 9 6900HX, as well as the Core i9-12900H, which has previously dominated Intel's laptop offering. With those specifications, it's clear that this processor is aimed at high-performance laptops capable of replacing desktop computers for gaming or as a mobile workstation that doesn't require a jump to professional Xeons.

The rest of the HP Omen 17 configuration will help, as it includes 32 Gbytes of DDR5-4800 MHz memory and a 2 Tbyte M.2 NVMe Gen4 SSD. It includes an NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti, the most powerful GPU that can be placed on a laptop, in addition to the graphics built into the CPU.

The laptop, designed to replace desktop computers, features a 17.3-inch screen with a refresh rate of 165 Hz, and we anticipate that HP will provide many panels to select from, not just the one described as FHD.

The keyboard is backlit, mechanical with optical switches, and powered by Bang & Olufsen speakers. To keep the temperature of those desktop-grade components under control, the cooling system will also need to be unique.

Surely, we will see this Core i9-12900HX in laptops from other manufacturers soon, and they will be wonderful machines to replace desktop PCs like this Omen.
