Pique says his relationship with Shakira affected the atmosphere in Barcelona: Tensions with Guardiola grew since they began seeing each other
Barcelona star Gerard Pique claims that his relationship with Shakira has caused tensions in his relationship with former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.
Gerard Pique and Guardiola in tandem won everything that could've been won by a football club in Barcelona's historic period between 2008 and 2012. Guardiola spent a total of four years at the helm of the club and during that time won three La Liga titles, two Champions Leagues, and other important titles.
But towards the end of his stay in Barcelona, relationships became increasingly tense as Guardiola's intense management style began to irritate the players. For Pique, the relationship he had with Guardiola began to change when he met his current wife Shakira.
"We reached a moment of tension with him, not just me but the dressing room in general. The rivalry with Jose Mourinho has greatly exhausted him. Pep wanted complete control over what was happening" he told reporters.
"I started dating Shakira and our relationship changed. Now, the relationship is perfect. But there was a lot of pressure on me then. I felt like I had to do everything in training perfectly," he admitted, adding that he even intended to leave the club that season.
Fortunately for Barcelona fans, Pique did not leave, and since then, among other trophies, he has won five more La Liga titles and another Champions League.
