Legendary Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has died today at the age of 81.

The news was confirmed by his agent.

The legendary drummer passed away a few weeks after retiring from a US tour due to heart surgery.

- This time my timing was not the best - the drummer joked at the time and said that he did not want to disappoint the fans with another cancellation of the tour.

It was then announced that Watts would be replaced on the tour by Steve Jordan  (64), who had previously collaborated with  Keith Richards  (77). A statement from the band's spokesman said that 'no one could have predicted this', Rolling Stone reports .

"Watts died earlier today in a London hospital surrounded by his family," his agent said.

- Charlie was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and one of the most important drummers of his generation - he added Doherty, reports AP News .

The sad news was shared on The Rolling Stones ’official Twitter, and band members, as well as Watts’ family and friends, asked for understanding and privacy at this difficult time.
