American actor Sean Penn called on Hollywood to boycott the Oscars, unless the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is given the opportunity to speak tonight at a solemn ceremony in Los Angeles.
"I invite everyone who participates to understand, although I understand that this may be their moment to become famous with a film, that they will shine more if they protest and boycott the Oscars" - Penn told CNN, reports the New York Post.
The actor has won two Oscars in his career so far, and he promised to publicly "undermine" the award ceremony, if they do not allow Zelenskyy to speak at the event.
One of the hosts of the ceremony, Amy Schumer, presented the idea of Zelenskyy speaking at tonight's award ceremony last week.
- "As I understand it, a decision was made not to do that. If the Academy that awards prizes does not allow it, if they do not think they should support the leaders in Ukraine, who receive bullets and bombs for us while trying to protect Ukrainian children, then I think this is the most shocking moment in Hollywood history" - she said.
Recall, Director and actor Sean Penn was in Ukraine to continue working on a documentary about the ongoing Russian attack. Penn attended media briefings, met with Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk, and talked to journalists and military personnel about the Russian invasion.
However, the actor left Ukraine a few days later, then posted a photo on Twitter where he was pushing a suitcase while walking along the road due to the crowd and the column of cars going towards the Polish border. He was also in Ukraine in November last year when he worked on a project produced by Weiss Studios.
This Oscar winner has participated in many international humanitarian and anti-war actions over the years and founded the non-profit CORE disaster relief organization in response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, as discussed in the documentary Citizen Penn.
