Serena Williams breaks silence on Will Smith
The Oscar winner punched the comedian in the face for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
Serena Williams has spoken out about Will Smith's tumultuous response to Chris Rock's joke about Jada Pinkett Smith at the 2022 Academy Awards.
The tennis player seemed to have been stunned dumbfounded by the frightening incident in which the actor crashed the stage and violently assaulted the comic, as shown on Instagram Stories. She could be seen gazing at the camera and then away with an expression of complete astonishment on her face in a video that appeared to address the occurrence.
She then proceeded to make another video. "I just sat down 'because I was like, I must put that drink down," she continued as the audience erupted in applause for another Academy Award winner, cutting her short.
Will smacked Chris and said "get my wife's name out of your [expletive] mouth" after Chris made a joke about his wife's shaved head following her struggle with alopecia while presenting the award for Best Documentary.
Will won the Best Actor Award for his depiction of Serena and Venus's father Richard Williams in the film King Richard only moments after the event.
When Will returned to the stage to accept the award, he apologized and delivered a sad acceptance speech in which he compared himself to his King Richard character, who was a "fierce protector of his family."
"I am astounded by what God is asking me to do and be in this world at this time in my life," he said. "I've been instructed my entire life to love people, protect citizens, and be a river to my folks." I want to be a representative of that type of love, care, and concern.
I'd want to apologize to the Academy, as well as all of my fellow candidates. This is a great moment, and I'm not sobbing because I didn't receive an award; it's about being able to shed a light for others."
"Art imitates life: I resemble my insane father. They said the same thing about Richard Williams. Love, on the other hand, will drive you insane "He went on to say that he hoped the Academy would invite him back after the incident.
