Colombian pop star Shakira could find herself in big trouble after a Spanish judge ruled he saw "enough clues" to try the planet-popular singer for tax fraud, media reported on Thursday.
The Barcelona State Attorney's Office accuses the 44-year-old singer of failing to pay a total of 14.5 million euros(around $ 900.000) in taxes in Spain between 2012 and 2014.
The singer, known for hits like “Waka Waka” and “Hips don’t lie,” denies guilt.
If an out-of-court settlement is not reached, Shakira could end up in court and in prison, La Vanguardia reported on Thursday.
The background to the dispute is the question of where Shakira was required to pay taxes in the said period. The state attorney's office claims the singer lived in Spain for more than 183 days, each of the three disputed years, which is they believe she should have paid tax on her total income in Spain.
Shakira, on the other hand, points out that from 2012 to 2014 she was a taxpayer of the Bahamas, not Spain, and that she only occasionally traveled to Spain.
Shakira has been in a relationship with Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique for ten years and has two children. Shakira claims to have lived officially in Spain since 2015.
