Charlie Watts had to retire from the Rolling Stones' upcoming tour of America after emergency surgery. The drummer was supposed to go on tour with the band next month but had to undergo surgery in London after getting the results of a routine checkup. The operation was said to have been successful, but the 80-year-old is now facing weeks of recovery, meaning his scheduled ‘No Filter’ tour is coming too soon, i.e. he won’t fully recover by then to be able to withstand the rhythm of the tour.
Charlie will be replaced by band friend Steve Jordan. Charlie, who is considered one of the greatest rock drummers ever, admitted he was disappointed with the omission, but insisted on heeding the doctor’s advice.
- After all the disappointments due to the tour delay caused by Covid, I really don't want many Stones fans in the United States who held tickets to have another delay or cancellation. So I asked my great friend Steve Jordan to stand in for me, Charlie Watts said.
"It's an absolute honor and privilege to be Charlie's deputy and I'm looking forward to rehearsing with Mick, Keith, and Ronnie," Steve Jordan said.
