Stars like Cher, Mariah Carey, Halsey, Tinasha, Liz Phair, and Brandy tweeted to show solidarity with pop star Britney Spears who has petitioned to have her conservatorship to be lifted, which leaves all of her finances and business controlled by her father.
Britney Spears told the judge responsible for overseeing her controversial custody on Wednesday that she wants her life back and that the 13-year conservatorship her father Jamie Spears has had over her father since 2008 is over.
The 39-year-old pop star's remarks, made via video link at a Los Angeles court hearing, are her first public address about a court-approved arrangement introduced in 2008 when she suffered a nervous breakdown.
Spears, 39, said in an emotional statement that conservatorship was abuse.
“I just want my life back,” she said.
“I’m not here to be someone’s slave,” she added.
"I'm traumatized. I'm not happy. I can't sleep"; she said.
“I’m so angry and crying every day,” she added.
Cher tweeted that she would call government officials over the Britney Spears case:
"I'll try to call. I may fail ... But I'll try."
Liz Phair expressed regret over Britney Spears' position:
"The oldest trick in the book of patriarchy: Declare a woman crazy and gain control of her property."
Halsey announced, "I wholeheartedly hope she will be rewarded with freedom from this abusive system," and criticized "anyone who thinks he has the authority to control a person's reproductive health as an institution or individual."
Los Angeles Supreme Court Judge Brenda Penny praised Spears for speaking out.
“I know it took a lot of courage,” Penny said.
"I want to commend you again for really stepping out and letting us hear your thoughts, not just me but everyone involved in this case."
