"Take my breath away" has not come down from the top of the music list for weeks, and today it is an unsurpassed evergreen that has entered the history of pop music. The famous song was written by the hitherto unknown American band "Berlin", to which this composition brought planetary popularity.
“We were lucky. Until then, we were nobody and nothing. We didn't have a single hit, we were a small underground band” - singer Terry Nunn remembers her beginnings today. Nunn told how the collaboration with the big Hollywood production came about.
“Giorgio Moroder, the producer of the film, had in mind me, but also some other names from the world of music. They were more important and famous names than me and my band. Some of the musicians recorded demos, but the production did not like any of that. So I got the opportunity and delighted them” - said today, 62-year-old Nunn.
She also won an Oscar for her performance of the song "Take my breath away" with the group "Berlin", behind which there is an interesting story. Namely, Terry and other members of the band refused to come to the Oscars, because they were conditioned to sing only the refrain of the song on stage.
“I said I wouldn't come if I couldn't perform the whole song. As they did not agree, I went on tour with the band, and at the time of the Oscars, we were in Taiwan. We watched the award on television in a hotel room and realized that our song was a winner - the singer recalled and added: “It was a stupid decision, I was young and stupid. I should have gone to the award ceremony.”
Although the band disbanded in the late ’80s, they reunited in 1998 and have been actively playing and holding concerts and touring ever since. Due to the pandemic, they were forced to reduce their activities for a while, but they are currently promoting their latest album "Transcendence", released in 2019.
It is interesting that even 36 years after the release of the original "Top Gun", Terry did not have the opportunity to meet Tom Cruise, but she met Kelly McGillis during a trip to Italy. “When we met, Kelly cried with happiness and told me that my song changed her life. It was very emotional and I am happy to have had the opportunity to meet her” - said Terry.
