Tom Cruise didn't want to make 'Top Gun' sequel

The sequel to "Top Gun", after numerous vicissitudes that slowed down the shooting of the film, finally arrived in cinemas around the world. It is already obvious that the sequel will surpass the first part which was recorded 36 years ago. The director's most difficult and at the same time, the biggest task was to convince Tom Cruise to star in the sequel to the film.

The director of the film, Joseph Kosinski, revealed for the "Daily Mail" that he actually had only half an hour to convince Cruise. “I read the script, I had some ideas, and Jerry (Bruckheimer, the producer) liked them. He said ‘You know what, you have to tell Tom directly.’ So we flew to Paris, where Tom was filming "Mission Impossible", we had about half an hour of his time” - said Kosinski.

The director was aware that the goal he set in front of him was difficult, and that Tom did not want to get involved in shooting the sequel to the film. “It is one of those moments as a director, you have one in every film, where you are on the spot to explain why this film should be shot. I had 30 minutes to do it. And at the end of the tunnel, he picked up the phone, called the head of Paramount Pictures, and said, ‘We're making another Top Gun.’ It is quite impressive to see the power of a real movie star at that moment” - said the director, although he did not reveal the secret of what changed the main star’s opinion. The director revealed why the sequel was named "Top Gun: Maverick" and not "Top Gun 2".

We will not call it "Top Gun 2", we will call it "Top Gun: Maverick". It's a character-led story, a drama with this huge action movie around it”, the director stated. "Top Gun: Maverick" has so far managed to earn 248 million dollars worldwide, which is a fantastic result considering that instead of cinemas during the pandemic, the world's streaming platforms took the lead, and the sequel is not shown in the two largest markets: Russia and China.
