Verstappen is officially the Formula 1 champion
Mercedes dropped the appeal against Verstappen and now, he is officially the Formula 1 champion! He will be awarded the world title tonight at the Gala Dinner.
The Mercedes team has decided to withdraw the appeal against the victory of Red Bull driver Max Verstappen in the last race of the Formula 1 season for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
In the last round, Verstappen went over the seven-time world champion Mercedes driver Luis Hamilton, and thus won the first title in the championship.
Mercedes previously announced an appeal to the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to restart the race in the last lap.
Earlier, five laps before the end, due to the incident of the driver of Williams, Nicolas Latifi, a safety vehicle came out on the track.
"Together with Luis, we carefully considered how to respond to the events in the last race. We have always been guided by love for this sport and we believe that every competition should end in a race. "On Sunday, many, including us, thought that the way things were going was not right," the German team said in a statement.
The FIA announced on Wednesday night that it will form a commission, which will deal with the analysis of the last race.
"Mercedes will actively work with the commission to build a better Formula 1 - for every team and every fan, who loves this sport as much as we do. We believe that the FIA is responsible for this process and we hereby withdraw the complaint, "the statement added.
Verstappen will be awarded the world title tonight at the Gala Dinner, organized by the FIA in Paris.
Max was born in Belgium and he arrived in Formula 1 at the age of 17 as the youngest competitor. Interestingly, his dad also drove a Formula 1, and his mom competed in karting. Although he was born and raised in Belgium, he decided to perform under the Dutch flag, because he “felt more like a Dutchman” on his father’s side. He spent more time with the Dutch, as he once discovered.
