What caused Daniel Day-Lewis to retire
On June 20, 2017, three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis announced that he was retiring from the world of acting.
A brief statement was issued at the time: "Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer work as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all his collaborators and the audience who enjoyed his film projects. It is his private decision and no one, neither he nor his representatives will comment on this decision." To this day, the actor has remained with his decision, which is still quite a mystery, and the question is whether the "method" is to blame for everything. It is interesting that Day-Lewis applied the acting technique known as the "method", which meant complete emotional and physical identification with the character.
Working on the role of a quadriplegic in the film "My Left Foot", for which he won the first Oscar in 1989, he did not move from a wheelchair. He asked to be spoon-fed even during the breaks and learned to put the record on the turntable with his toes. Due to the role of the alleged IRA bomber who ends up in prison in the film "In the Name of the Father", he spent three nights in a cell, and the guards poured cold water on him, in order to better understand the torments of a political prisoner.

During the filming of "The Witch of Salem", he stayed in a village without electricity and water, where he built a house himself, using tools from the 17th century. For the role in "The Boxer", he trained boxing twice a day for three years, and the fact that he broke his nose and injured his back did not stop him. Due to the "The Age of Innocence", he walked around New York for two months with a stick and a cylinder. Playing Bill Butcher in "Gangs of New York", he developed pneumonia because he wore only a thin coat in the cold, explaining that a thicker fabric would not be "historically authentic".
He prepared for the role of US President Abraham Lincoln for a year, reading his hundreds of biographies and everything he ever wrote. On the set, the actors were asked not to speak with a British accent even during breaks, so as not to disturb his concentration, and he started sending text messages to his film wife Sally Field before filming, signing only A - like Abraham.
