Is Suri Cruise estranged from dad Tom?
If you like going to the cinema, you've probably seen something by Tom Cruise. The "Mission Impossible" star is famous around the world and as a result, many parts of his life have played out publicly.
Cruise has three children, the eldest Isabella and Connor he shares with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, and the youngest Suri with ex-wife Katie Holmes. While it's clear that Cruise has a great relationship with Isabella and Connor and that both children are active members of his Scientology faith, it's less clear what his relationship with Suri is.
When Holmes and Cruise divorced, he confirmed that Kate's desire to keep Suri out of the Scientology faith was a factor in their split. Here's a look at Tom Cruise's relationship with his daughter.
Like many parents-to-be, Tom was thrilled with the arrival of his third child, Suri Cruise. He was so excited that he reportedly bought his own sound machine so he could see her every day. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got Suri on April 18, 2006. By all accounts, Suri's birth into the world was extraordinary. In fact, just days after her birth, Cruise described the experience, saying, “It was everything we wanted it to be...It was spiritual. It was powerful. It was indescribable.

Many media outlets shared the news of Suri's birth, as public interest in the newborn was quite high. Tom and Kate's rep shared information about Suri's name, noting that it has Hebrew origins and could mean "princess," as well as Persian roots, which could give her name meaning of "red rose." In 2004, Katie Holmes admitted to a magazine that she fantasized about marrying Tom Cruise. Apparently, Tom and his daughter had a solid relationship until 2012. That was the year Katy filed for divorce, which apparently took Cruise by surprise.
While Tom and Katie have been pretty private about the exact reasons for their divorce, Cruise has gotten away with admitting that one of the reasons Holmes wanted a divorce was to supposedly "protect" her daughter from Cruise's religion, Scientology. The admission was made during his testimony during a defamation lawsuit he filed against the tabloid.
To the surprise of many, Cruise was not awarded custody of Suri at all and was told he could visit her up to 10 days a month. Cruise has also pledged a pretty hefty amount in child support, and TMZ reported that he pays over $33,000 a month for Suri's care.
Although the custody agreement between Katie and Tom clearly states that he can see their daughter Suri 10 days a month, it seems that he is not making it happen. A source close to the situation once told "US Weekly" that it seems to him that this is a deliberate choice that Cruise is making.
Tom admitted in 2013 that he had not seen his youngest child for at least 100 days, explaining that his extended absence was due to his filming schedule. He later claimed that Suri looks fine without him, adding: "I also think Suri is a very happy child, confident and has a good sense of herself."
In 2016, "InTouchWeekly" reported that Cruise had not seen or spoken to Suri in more than two and a half years. A source reportedly close to the publication said that they used text messages to stay in touch but Suri stopped accepting her father's explanations for why he disappeared.
While it's unclear when Cruise will be reunited with his daughter, one thing is certainly true and that is that the road to this point has been long, winding, and quite confusing. Maybe the two of them will get closer when she grows up. While Suri lives in New York with her mom Katie, Cruise has reportedly been living in London since April 2021.
