Nearly 5,000 Covid-19 cases in the UK are linked to the Boardmasters Festival

Nearly 5,000 cases of coronavirus infection have been linked to the Boardmasters music festival held in Cornwall, the UK this month, the Guardian reports.

Health officials said 4,700 people who tested positive for coronavirus confirmed that they had attended or were associated with the Newquay festival. About three-quarters of them are 16-21 years old, and about 800 of them live in the district.

The number of people infected with Covid in the southwest of England has risen but is rising sharply in Cornwall and the Scilly Islands, from 717 cases per 100,000 inhabitants infected in the seven days to 19 August including those mentioned.

The Cornwall council said it was considering canceling the Boardmasters, which took place from August 11 to 15 and was attended by about 50,000 people, but decided the festival could continue. It was insisted that his staff work closely with the organizers to make the event as safe as possible.

The organizers of the festival say that the security measures they implemented regarding the protection against coronavirus were even stricter than those prescribed by the state. Vaccination or testing certificates were required upon entering the festival venue while wearing masks was not mandatory, but visitors were encouraged to wear them. But in the end, organizers said no event could completely eliminate the risk of infection.

Rachel Wigglesworth, director of public health for Cornwall and the Scilly Islands, said: "Coronavirus cases have been growing steadily throughout Cornwall in recent weeks - especially in our tourist resorts."
