The Best Dance Movies of All Time

Dance movies strike the perfect balance between edge-of-your-seat action and overwhelming romance. From old Hollywood to teen stories to dark dramas, chances are there's a great dance movie for everyone.

This genre has some incredibly good classics, some truly trashy but very exciting films, but also some more serious films that explore the incredibly stressful world of high-stakes dance to absolutely incredible effects.

Billy Elliot

The fact that this movie inspired a hugely successful Broadway musical should tell you enough. Billy is a boy from a small mining town in Great Britain who just wants to do ballet, so get ready for a really warm, touching, and great dance story.

Dirty Dancing

The king of dance movies, "Dirty Dancing" is the story of Frances 'Baby' Houseman, who is having the time of her life with Johnny Castle, the dance instructor at the resort where her family is vacationing. It's hard to single out the best dance scene from the film, but probably the most famous is the legendary after-work dance sequence.

Black swan

Opinions differ on whether or not this movie is actually scary, but this list isn't about the scariest movies, it's about the dancing - and "Black Swan" has plenty of dancing. Natalie Portman stars as Nina, a young woman desperate to land the lead role in her ballet company's production of Swan Lake. Throw in an overbearing but handsome director, competition in the form of Mila Kunis, and a psychotic mom who lives through her daughter, and you've got a big nightmare ballet stew.

Step Up

"Step Up" is a romantic comedy about a young delinquent who helps a polished girl from dance school add some hip-hop moves to her big audition routine, but it's really the story of how Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan fell in love. Four sequels followed with other actors and somewhat different stories, but this one is - without a doubt - the best.
