A brave soldier in a harsh environment in the movie "Bastarden"
In 1755, the impoverished Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen) sets out to conquer a vast uninhabitable land with a seemingly impossible goal.
After making his debut in the English language with the imperiled Stephen King adaptation "The Dark Tower" (2017), writer/director Nikolaj Arcel returns to mining historical obscurities in his native Denmark with "The Promised Land" (although its original title, "Bastarden", remains the much more provocative and thematically fitting choice).
In the mid-1700s, Denmark's King Frederik V declared that the wild moors of Jutland should be tamed, cultivated and colonized in order to spread civilization and collect new taxes for the royal house. However, no one dared to follow the king's order. The swamp meant certain death – a cursed land was occupied by bloodthirsty wolves, bandits, and a brutal and merciless nature.
But in the late summer of 1755, a lone soldier named Ludvig Kahlen rode into the swamp in stubborn pursuit of a lifelong dream, determined to achieve his goal: the swamp would either bring him the riches and honor he had long sought or death.
A unique story of survival and the human spirit
The film "Bastarden" is a unique story about survival and the human spirit. It shows the cruel struggle of man against nature and his weaknesses. Ludvig Kahlen is a brave soldier who is convinced that he will succeed in his plan. However, the swamp is merciless and Ludvig struggles to survive.
The film was shot in the beautiful nature of Jutland, and the actors played their roles perfectly. Director Anders Thomas Jensen made an excellent film that will stay in your memory for a long time.
Recall, Danish screenwriter and director Nikolaj Arcel’s first feature film was the award-winning 2004 political thriller "Kongekabale". In 2012, "Royal Affair", starring Alicia Vikander and Mads Mikkelsen, gave Arcel international fame. The film received nominations at the Oscars, the Golden Globes, and the Césars. In 2017, Nikolaj Arcel directed "The Dark Tower", the movie based on Stephen King’s horror fantasy novel of the same name.
