Abigail Breslin went through her first Christmas without the company of her father, whom she lost in February after he contracted coronavirus.
On December 24, the actress wrote a long message on Instagram to reflect on the emotions she is going through during this Christmas season. The young woman is just one of the millions of people who lost a loved one to COVID during these past two years.
"Happy Christmas Eve to all! I'm not going to lie. This is a first for me. My first holiday season without my dad. I love the holiday season and I'm so grateful to be able to spend it with my mom, my siblings, my friends and my boyfriend... I'm really blessed. But it's hard to know that I can't call my dad and wish him a Merry Christmas or send him a gift certificate to a good steakhouse," Breslin began.
"I wish there was an expiration date to missing someone... but I had almost 25 wonderful years of having an amazing father and I feel like I know what he would be saying right now. I think it would be somewhere along the lines of 'why are you crying girl? I'm fine, don't worry about me! I love you, pretty,'" Breslin continued after noting that "some days are harder than others" and that "pain is a deceptive little monster."
"For anyone who misses someone this holiday season... I see you, I hear you, and you're not alone. However, I will greatly appreciate those who are here and embrace them stronger than ever. Merry Christmas to all... and everyone, good evening," Breslin concluded in her post.
In February, the actress announced that her father, 78, had died shortly after contracting COVID-19.
"It's hard to write this. Harder than I thought... I am in shock and devastation. At 6:32 pm EST, my sweet, perfect, amazing, heroic and wonderful dad passed away after my family and I said goodbye. It was COVID-19 that shortened my sweet dad's life too much. I appreciate more than you believe, the love and support that my family and I have received," Breslin posted.
The 24-year-old Oscar nominee for Little Miss Sunshine accompanied this emotional tribute to her father with endearing photos of special moments. In addition, she wanted to remember how "funny, tenacious, rebellious, intelligent and incredible human being" he was.
Days before Michael's departure, Abigail warned of the delicate state of her father who had to be immediately assisted with a ventilator after the effects caused by COVID-19. "Please keep praying for my father, I wish I could talk to him on the phone," she wrote.
Since before his departure, Abigail has claimed the importance of taking care of yourself and others by wearing a mask and protecting yourself from this virus. In addition, she has emphasized, with the example of her family, that this pandemic is not an something that was made up but a harsh reality.
"The mask is not uncomfortable, do you know what is uncomfortable? A ventilator," she replied angrily to a Twitter user who joked about it.
A lot of love and strength to the family at this time.
