Sirhan, who is 77, has been in prison since 1968 when he killed a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in a hotel in Los Angeles. Robert F. Kennedy was the younger brother of President John F. Kennedy.

The decision will be reviewed by the members of the California Parole Board in the next 90 days, and then the parole should be granted or refused by the Governor of California. This was Sirhan's sixteenth parole hearing.

Douglas Kennedy, the senator's youngest son, advocated for the conditional release of his father's killer. The prosecutor refused to come to the hearing, saying that he should stay behind bars.

"I think I've been in fear of Sirhan and his name all my life in one way or another. Even today, I am grateful to see him as a person worthy of compassion and love," said Douglas Kennedy, adding that he believes that any prisoner who is determined not to pose a threat to himself or the world should be released.

The second son of the assassinated senator, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, sent a letter to the Board supporting Sirhan's release.

Sirhan, a Christian Palestinian from Jordan, admitted that he was angry with Kennedy for his support of Israel, but that he did not remember the murder.

At the hearing, Sirhan said that he had learned to control his anger and that he was committed to a peaceful life.

"I would never put myself in danger again. You have my promise. I will always take care of security, peace, and non-violence," Sirhan said.
